A Canopy of Protection: A Story of Kindness and Trust
Walking in old town Saint Charles yesterday, the sky became a huge dark cloud, with air so humid I could taste it. But it was warm, and walking in the rain has never bothered me. Then I saw him… sitting on a bench. Long messy hair. Two different shoes. One half on. And a backpack that was probably full of treasures—treasures he would want to protect.
So I ran several blocks back to my car and retrieved an umbrella. A few minutes later, I sat beside him and found out his name was Matty. His huge toothless grin was warm and childish. Matty and I talked for a while as people hurried past, giving us interested glances.
I asked him if he wanted to get a bite to eat with me, but he said he wasn’t hungry yet, so I gave him some cash and handed him the umbrella. Then we parted ways. Walking back to my car, the rain came, and I smiled, knowing Matty and his many treasures were covered. Driving home, I had to pull over because of the strength of the rain.
Right in front of me was a big canopy that completely protected my car. Ten seconds later, the hail came. I heard the Lord speak to my heart, “Just like you protected Matty, I’m protecting you.” God knew I wouldn’t want my new car pelted by hail.
I think that’s the key: knowing storms will come but not living in fear, trusting God will take care of us as we let Him love others through us.
